Gifty Oware-Mensah |
The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has arrested Gifty Oware-Mensah, a former Deputy Director General of the National Service Authority (NSS).
Gifty’s arrest has raised eyebrows and sparked controversy.
Gifty Oware-Mensah was taken into custody on Friday morning and has since been denied bail.
Upon her arrival into the country on Tuesday, she responded to the invitation of the investigative body where she was granted bail.
She was to report back on Friday, and she was detained at an unknown location.
According to sources, Gifty Oware-Mensah was asked to provide the receipt of her wristwatch as a condition for bail, a demand that has been widely criticized as unreasonable and an attempt to harass her.
The NIB’s refusal to disclose her whereabouts, even to her husband, has further fueled concerns about her treatment and the fairness of the investigation.
Oware-Mensah’s is linked to an ongoing investigation into alleged payroll fraud at the NSA, which is reported to have cost the state GHȼ50 million each month.
Her detention is in connection with President John Dramani Mahama’s order to the Security Agencies to declare her wanted and confiscate her assets after announcing it in Parliament when delivering the State of The Nation Address.
A source at press time confirmed to The Daily Gist that “the NIB said they wanted a surety for bail. John Boadu signed the bail, but they returned with another demand. They said they needed two more to sign the bail”.
“Her PA was called by her husband, who responded to it since they would not allow the husband to sign it. The Personal Assistant rushed there, only to be told that they’d sent her out of the premises.”
Gifty Oware-Mensah, then Deputy Executive Director, was responsible for administration and finance, and she is expected to be a key witness in the investigation.
However, the NIB’s handling of her detention has raised questions about the agency’s impartiality and commitment to upholding the rights of suspects.
