Government has no plans to sell ECG, NEDCo – John Jinapor

John Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has stated that the government has not made any decision to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
He explained that the government is instead exploring ways to partner with the private sector to enhance the efficiency of revenue collection for these power distribution companies.
Addressing the Presidential Press Corps on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Jubilee House, the Energy Minister categorically stated that ECG and NEDCo remain public assets.
"Let me be clear: the government has not made any decision to sell ECG or NEDCo. What we are exploring is a partnership to enhance the efficiency of revenue collection, which remains a key challenge for the power distributors," he said.
Jinapor further assured, "We acknowledge the concerns raised, but I assure Ghanaians that ECG and NEDCo remain public assets. Any intervention we undertake will be aimed at improving their efficiency, not privatizing them."
However, the Energy Minister had earlier directed the newly inaugurated seven-member technical committee to consult extensively with stakeholders within the power distribution sector and develop a comprehensive plan for the privatisation of ECG within one month.
The committee, composed of energy experts and key stakeholders, has been tasked with outlining strategies for transitioning ECG to private sector management, focusing on improving efficiency and service delivery.
